Welcoming in a new year, apart from the partying and festivities, is always a time when I’m forced to reflect on the past 12 months and assess how well I did in achieving the goals I set out for myself. There are definitely things I wanted to do this year, and didn’t. It’s easy to get down about that sort of thing, but it’s also good to remember that just because the year is over doesn’t mean your desire to achieve those things is. A year is just a measurement of time, and some things will take longer than you expect, or want.
What surprised me though, was looking back through the archives of the blog and seeing all the things I DID do, some of them things I hadn’t even considered a possibility, and a lot of cool things I’d taken for granted just because I hadn’t purposely set out to make them happen.
I think I have a predisposition to magnify the bad, and minimise, or even dismiss the good. I’ll try a bit harder to put my rose-tinted glasses on in 2013, and I’ll start with celebrating the year that was here:
A few faves:
This Strawberry Sangria post I did in January, I had so many people coming up to me saying they tried it and loved it, or instagramming & tweeting pics of it – twas rad and I reckon we should all get amongst the strawberry sangria again this summer.
All of Talia’s Treats : I know a lot of people come to this site just to check for yummy recipes that Talia puts up, and I’m so grateful she does. It seems every time I’m having a ‘crap, I have nothing to blog about week’ she comes up with some great recipes to add to the site. It all began when she made this amazing six course meal for my family that I thought, right, I need more of this.
The ‘Good in Your Hood’ series: I know I’ve only done two so far but they’re two of my personal faves this year. It was an idea I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and it’s something I look forward to continue doing. Thanks Spycc (Onehunga) and K.One (Masterton).
BU2MU Mixtapes: When I first posted this up Spotify in NZ was pretty new and not many people were on it, but if you’re on it now, add these mixtapes to your playlists – I took ages putting them together, and they’re really good, honest.
EDIT: Fave (hood) viral video of the year: ‘So Mata’usi Right Now’: I had to come back and add this video to the blog, I posted it here, it had me dying with laughter and I have been quoting from it ever since. The 4am ‘so mata usi right now’ tweet became somewhat of a tradition whenever I was out and well, so mata’usi, hahaha.
A few personal things:
I had my first ever blog-related interview with the NZ Fashion Fest site here, which also led to me to covering the Fashion Festival. InstaMay was a huge success, I was afraid no one would join in on that – but I was overwhelmed by how many people actually did. I covered New Zealand Fashion Week for the first time ever too – not just for the site but also for boohoo.co.nz, as well as filming a special for TV2′s IAMTV.
I also took part in a 3 month fitness challenge, which I talked about the beginning of here - if you followed me on twitter and instagram, you’d have known it consumed my life at the time, and if you still follow me you may have guessed that I’ve fallen off of late, ha. I can still run around the Panmure Basin though, which was impossible for me not so long ago.
In case you were wondering – here are the top 10 posts of the year:
sidenote: Although ‘lani says’ is by far the most popular search term that gets people to this blog (*phew* I’d be kinda embarrassed if it wasn’t) the second most popular is ‘top karaoke songs 2012′, hence the number one spot:
1: the 10 best songs to sing at karaoke, 2: boyfriend’s adidas jacket, 3: Introducing James Jeffery, 4: #InstaMay, 5: Monday Silliness, Songs to Dirty Dance to, 6: David Dallas: Ever Get The Feeling – the fashion, 7: Sock-buns are cool, 8: camo, neon, red-lips & pa-rappa the rappa, 9: Wellington Eating: Pickle 10: R&V from the Stage
P.S many of these are either boyfriend related, or posts the bf has linked to on his fb page, so, thanks for being popular babe.
